Work Experience

Key Stage 3 & 4

Hedgehogs Class

KS3 and KS4 classes are taking part in the Modern Work Experience Project. Through this initiative, students work with an identified employer over a period of time to develop their understanding of different workplaces, explore a range of job roles, and build meaningful connections within the local community.

Recently, one of our classes, Hedgehogs, began their work experience project with RESTORE Carlisle. They visited the charity shop for a morning session, where they learned about the variety of tasks involved in running the shop.

During their visit, pupils sorted clothing by changing hanger types, checking garment labels, and preparing items for sale. They also organised crockery by labelling pieces with coloured stickers and grouping them into sets. In addition, students checked and cleaned CDs, and inspected jigsaws and games to ensure they were complete.

The class brought some jigsaws and games back to school to continue counting and checking them, and they are looking forward to returning next term to complete their work.

Puffins Class

Pupils from Puffins class participated in a valuable work experience visit to Susan’s Farm, where they explored the journey of food production from farm to fork. During the visit, they prepared a pasta bake using fresh ingredients and gained practical experience in animal care, including feeding the chickens and sheep. Pupils also had the opportunity to groom the cows, helping to develop their confidence, responsibility, and understanding of daily farm life.

The visit provided an engaging and educational experience, supporting the development of practical skills and enriching learning beyond the classroom.

Work experience is an important part of our student learning and can help develop skills that students may need for their future after James Rennie Sixth Form. Each student, once assessed suitable, will be interviewed by myself and given a questionnaire on what they would like to do for work experience.

Once I have an idea of what students would like to do, I get in touch with suitable employers regarding placements. Once a placement is agreed, a risk assessment is complete and an interview is set up.

Once all paperwork is in place and a date is agreed, the student can start. Work Experience is part of the Employability course that students are working towards.
