Keeping your Child Safe Online
Technology plays an important role in learning, communication, and fun – but there are risks too.
At James Rennie School, we teach online safety regularly, adapting our support to meet all students’ needs so they can stay safe whilst online.
What we do at school:
- We use a secure filtered internet connection, regularly checked to block harmful or inappropriate content.
- Our teaching includes age and ability appropriate lessons on online safety, including special guidance for students with SEND.
- Staff are trained to understand online risks specific to our students (e.g. trust, impulse, communication) and to support them if issues arise.
What you can do at home/ How parents & carers can help:
- Talk with your child regularly about what they do online.
- Use parental controls and privacy settings on devices and apps.
- Let us know of any technology or platforms your child uses so school can address them in lessons.
- Request easy-read or pictorial guides if helpful.

Thinkuknow is an education programme from the National Crime Agency’s CEOP Command. Since 2006, it aims to ensure that everyone has access to this practical information – children, young people, their parents and carers and the professionals who work with them.
National Online Safety
National Online Safety’s mission is to make the internet a safer place for children. They aim to do this by equipping school staff, parents and children with the knowledge they need to understand online dangers and how best to react should an incident arise. The link above provides up to date information about a wide variety of social media apps and platforms your child might be using.

- If your child has had a worrying experience online, please let us know – we have staff who understand SEND needs.
- You can report concerns to CEOP (for serious concerns about grooming or abuse).

Report a concern to CEOP
CEOP works to keep children safe from sexual abuse and grooming online. CEOP are unable to respond to reports about bullying, fake accounts or account hacking.
