The value of animal therapy is a powerful aid to stimulate communication, improve wellbeing and concentration, reduce anxiety and make the learning environment happier, more enjoyable and less intimidating.
We have the pleasure of having our own fully trained and accredited therapy dog on our Sixth Form site. Mr. Nibbles (Nibbs)
He joined the team in 2020 and has been a full-time member since. Mr. Nibbles and his handler, Keren, are qualified animal assisted therapy practitioners at distinction level.

9 Benefits of Animal Assisted Therapy
Increased empathy: Studies show that children living in homes that include a pet are more empathic than those who live in a pet-free home.
Developing an outward focus: Those who suffer mental health and self-esteem issues tend to be inwardly focused. Animal interaction, both observing, interacting and speaking encourages to focus more on their external environments and less on issues they may be facing.
Increased nurturing skills: The ability to nurture and care is learnt. Through animal care children learn to nurture and in nurturing the child also feels nurtured in return.
Increased mental stimulation: Mental stimulation occurs due to the increased socialisation and atmosphere created by the animal. Animals can also act as a distraction from personal troubles or problems.
Increased acceptance: Animals are none judgmental and accepting. This means the animals acceptance is not complicated by the psychological intricacies’ society presents.
Providing entertainment and stimulation: Watching an animal and observing its behaviour can be a source of joy and wellbeing, making us smile and laugh.
Increased socialization: Animal increase social interaction between pupils and each other and also staff. People become more responsive when engaged in interactions with animals.
Developing rapport: Animals help to establish emotionally stable, safe and none judgmental lines of communication for individuals.
Encouraging physical touch: Physical touch is beneficial to both the mind and spirit. Playing, stroking and generally interacting with an animal can offer a safe and appropriate form of physical contact which can have a positive influence on the child. The physiological benefits include lowered heart rate and blood pressure, contentment and reduced stress levels.
