James Rennie School is a place where every pupil is known, valued and supported as an individual.
We believe a diagnosis should guide how we support a young person, but it should never define who they are. Our focus is on understanding the whole child and helping them grow in confidence, communication and independence.
Working closely with families and professionals, we provide a personalised education that prepares pupils not only for their next stage of learning, but for life beyond school. Our aim is simple: to help every young person feel safe, develop their voice and achieve their potential.
We understand families want to know that their child will be understood, cared for and given every opportunity to succeed.
At James Rennie School, we take the time to really get to know each pupil. We understand that every young person arrives with their own strengths, challenges, personality and story. A diagnosis may help us shape the support we provide, but it never defines the person.

Every child is a person first
When families first visit James Rennie School, one thing becomes clear very quickly: we take the time to truly know every pupil.
A diagnosis may help us understand how to support a young person, but it never defines who they are. We teach a young person, who happens to have autism, not an autistic pupil. Each pupil arrives with their own personality, interests, challenges and strengths, and our job is to understand the whole person.

Communication at the Heart of Learning
Communication is central to everything we do.
Our goal is for every pupil to become a communicator, using the method that works best for them. For some pupils this may be speech; for others it may involve gesture, eye gaze, symbols, switches or assistive technology.
By placing communication and interaction at the centre of our curriculum, pupils are supported to:
- express their needs and preferences
- build relationships
- take part in learning
- develop their voice and independence
Communication opens the door to learning, relationships and participation in the wider world.
Understanding Behaviour
At James Rennie School we understand that behaviour is a form of communication.
When a pupil experiences difficulty or behaviour affects learning, we look beyond the behaviour itself and ask what the pupil may be trying to tell us. Our responsibility is to understand that message and respond in a way that supports the pupil.
Rather than expecting pupils to fit the system, we adapt the environment, support and teaching to meet their needs.
Removing Barriers to Learning
We continually reflect on what we do and why we do it.
If something prevents a pupil from accessing learning or reaching their potential, we challenge ourselves to change it. Our role is to identify barriers and replace them with better strategies, better support and better opportunities.
Every pupil deserves the chance to succeed.
Working Together
Supporting a young person’s development takes teamwork.
We work closely with families, therapists, medical professionals, and social care services to ensure each pupil receives the right support. By working together we can understand the full picture of a young person’s life and provide the best possible care and education.
Families are a vital part of our community, and we value their knowledge, insight and partnership.

Preparing Pupils for Life
Our curriculum is designed to help every young person thrive both now and in the future.
From Early Years through to Sixth Form, Preparation for Life runs through everything we do. Pupils develop essential skills in:
- communication
- literacy and numeracy
- independence
- social understanding
- technology and real-world learning
Learning is highly personalised through each pupil’s Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) so that teaching reflects their strengths, needs and aspirations.
We want every pupil to leave James Rennie School as:

Looking to the Future
As pupils grow older, we support them and their families in planning the next stage of life. This may include further education, employment, training or personalised support packages.
Transitions are carefully planned so that every young person can move forward with confidence.
